Premise

Project management is all about bringing order, discipline, visibility and predictability in the execution of a project. Based on a variety of projects executed across different industries and geographies, Global Standards have been developed for managing projects. An aspiring Project Manager needs to possess the knowledge and skills of a variety of techniques including fundamental concepts.

Description

Global PM Primer aims to familiarize us with some of the core concepts, tools and techniques of project management. Over a course of 30 days, in a purely virtual and social environment, we look to cover the very basics of a dozen of the forty-seven core concepts of Global Project Management.

The twelve concepts include
1. Project initiation kick-off
2. Define scope of the project
3. Bring all stakeholders on same page with respect to scope of project
4. Identify Stakeholders
5. Manage stakeholders
6. Time planning using critical path method
7. Cost control using earned value management technique
8. Risk management identify uncertainties
9. Analyse risks
10. Risk response planning avoid, mitigate, transfer, contingency
11. Human Resource planning
12. RACI chart, resource calendars

The project charter, scope statement, WBS, stakeholder register, stakeholder engagement assessment matrix, risk register, P-I matrix are some of the artifacts that I can expect to create.

We will learn these concepts thru documents, templates and videos and communicate with each other on screen casts, social and skype. There will certainly be several assignments and assessments to nail down the core concepts.

I won’t be alone as each one of us is partnered with a learning buddy undergoing a Masters in Computer Science program at an Indian university.

Finally, in addition to learning the core concepts of Global PM, there is an opportunity to significantly enhance my English communication skills. LSRW will be an important feature | Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing
